The Gershom Craft House, also known as Pomona Farm, is a historic home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It was built around 1806-1808. This special house is located near the Delaware River, about two miles from Trenton, New Jersey.

The House's Unique Style

The Gershom Craft House is a great example of Federal style architecture. This style was popular in the United States from about 1780 to 1830. It often used ideas from ancient Roman and Greek buildings.

The house mixes this grand style with local building traditions. Its four main rooms are each about 18 feet (5.5 meters) square. They also have high ceilings, about nine feet tall. Most of the original wood and metal parts inside the house are still there.

A Look at Its History

Gershom Craft: The First Owner

The house was built by Gershom Craft, a businessman from Trenton. He used it as a summer home and named his farm Pomona Farm. This name came from Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit trees. Craft planted over 100 different kinds of fruit trees on his 84-acre (34-hectare) farm.

Gershom Craft was an important person in his community. He owned a newspaper that supported the Federalist political party. He was also involved in local businesses, like the Trenton Water Works and the Trenton Banking Company.

Changes Over Time

In 1911, the large farm was divided into smaller pieces. Part of it became part of the Borough of Morrisville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Gershom Craft House is one of only two homes in Morrisville listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The other is Summerseat, where General George Washington stayed before the Battle of Trenton.

Today, the Gershom Craft House sits on a smaller, well-kept lot of about 0.75 acres (0.3 hectares). The property also includes other old buildings. These are a smokehouse, a carriage house, and a wooden shop.

Becoming a Historic Place

The Gershom Craft House was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This means it is recognized as an important part of American history.
