Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Commodore Gershom Jacques Van Brunt (born August 28, 1798 – died December 17, 1863) was an important officer in the United States Navy. He served during the American Civil War.

Serving in the US Navy

In the spring of 1861, Gershom Van Brunt was put in charge of a large steam warship called the USS Minnesota. His job was to help with the "blockade service" at Hampton Roads. This meant stopping ships from getting in or out of certain ports. He also played a big part in taking over the Hatteras Forts.

Later, he helped prepare a special trip to New Orleans for General Banks. When he passed away, he was working for the War Department. He was checking ships that carried supplies and soldiers in the New England area. He became a Commodore in July 1862.

The USS Minnesota

The USS Minnesota was ready for duty again on May 2, 1861. Commodore Van Brunt was its commander. The ship became the main ship, or "flagship," for the Atlantic Blockading Squadron. This group of ships was led by Flag Officer Silas Stringham.

The Minnesota arrived at Hampton Roads, Virginia, on May 13. The very next day, it captured three small sailing ships called schooners: the Mary Willis, Delaware Farmer, and Emily Ann. The Minnesota then captured other ships, including the bark Winfred on May 25 and the bark Sally McGee on June 26. The schooner Sally Mears was captured on July 1, and the bark Mary Warick was taken on July 10.

Battle with the CSS Virginia

During a battle with the Confederate ship CSS Virginia, the USS Minnesota got stuck on a mud bank. Tugs (small powerful boats) tried all night to pull her free, but they couldn't. However, something important happened that night: the USS Monitor arrived.

Commodore Van Brunt wrote in his official report, "All on board felt we had a friend that would stand by us in our hour of trial." This shows how relieved everyone was to see the Monitor.

Personal Life

Gershom Van Brunt was born in New Jersey in 1798. He joined the Navy from that state in 1818. He was married to Elizabeth Price Bradlee, and they had a son named Henry Van Brunt.

He passed away at his home in Dedham, Massachusetts, on December 17, 1863. People remembered him for his strong dedication, his great love for his country, and his firm belief that the American flag would always win.
