Gertrude: A West Virginia Ghost Town
Gertrude is located in Pocahontas County, in the state of West Virginia, United States. It is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) north-northeast of a town called Durbin.
What is a Ghost Town?
A ghost town is a place where most or all of the people have left. These towns often become empty because the main reason people lived there disappeared. For example, a mine might close, or a railroad might change its route. When jobs go away, people move to find new work.
Gertrude's History
Gertrude was once a real place with people living and working there. It even appeared on maps made by the West Virginia Geological Survey as late as 1929. This means it was still recognized as a settlement almost a hundred years ago. Over time, like many small towns, Gertrude became a ghost town.
