Gessie is a small community located in Vermillion County, Indiana, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Gessie is part of Highland Township.
Discovering Gessie's Past
Gessie was officially started in 1872. A man named Robert J. Gessie created the town. He decided to name it after himself.
Gessie's Post Office and Businesses
In the same year, 1872, a post office opened in Gessie. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1967.
For a long time, the main business in Gessie was a grain elevator. This tall building was used to store grain, like corn or wheat. It was located right next to the CSX railroad tracks. Sadly, a powerful tornado destroyed the grain elevator. After the tornado, parts of the old elevator were used to build new grain storage bins. These new bins were set up on the east side of town, across the railroad tracks.
