Getter Robo Go (also known as Getter Robot Go) is a Japanese mecha (giant robot) anime and manga series. It was created by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa. Sometimes, outside Japan, it was called Venger Robo or Venger Robot Go.

The anime TV show aired from February 11, 1991, to January 27, 1992. It had 50 episodes and was shown on TV Setouchi and TV Tokyo. At the same time, different manga (Japanese comic book) versions were released.

It's important to know that the anime and manga versions of Getter Robo Go tell different stories. The anime is a new take on the original Getter Robo series. However, the manga is a direct follow-up to the original Getter Robo manga.

The Getter Robo Go Anime Series

Anime Storyline

The story of the Getter Robo Go anime takes place in the early 2000s. A brilliant but crazy scientist named Doctor Rando wants to take over the world. He uses his secret base at the North Pole to launch attacks.

Doctor Rando has an army of powerful robots called Metal Beasts. These super robots are very strong, and regular weapons can't stop them. To fight back, Japan's Defense Agency asks for help from NISAR, a special aerospace company.

NISAR has developed a powerful robot called Getter Robo. At first, Dr. Tachibana, who leads the Getter Robo project, doesn't want to use it for fighting. But when a Metal Beast attacks, Getter Robo, piloted by a brave young man named Go Ichimonji, steps in.

Go manages to defeat the Metal Beast, but it comes at a cost. This event convinces Dr. Tachibana to make Getter Robo even better. It becomes a transforming robot that needs three pilots to work together. Go is later joined by Sho Tachibana (Dr. Tachibana's daughter) and Daido Gai. Together, they pilot Getter Robo to defeat the Metal Beasts and stop Doctor Rando's plans for world domination.

Anime Episodes

The Getter Robo Go anime series had a total of 50 episodes. Each episode showed the Getter Robo team facing new challenges and powerful Metal Beasts. The stories focused on teamwork, bravery, and fighting for Earth's safety.

Home Video Releases

After the TV show finished, Getter Robo Go was released for people to watch at home. It was first available on Laserdisc. Later, the entire series was released on DVD by Toei Video. This allowed fans to own and rewatch all the exciting adventures of Getter Robo Go.

Music from the Anime

The Getter Robo Go anime had catchy opening and ending songs. These songs were released as singles. The show's background music, called the soundtrack, was also released on two different CDs. The music helped make the battles and emotional moments in the anime even more exciting.

The Getter Robo Go Manga Series

There were three different manga versions of Getter Robo Go released around the same time as the TV show.

  • Two manga versions were drawn by Tatsuya Yasuda. These were published in magazines for younger boys, like TV-kun and Bessatsu Coro Coro Comic Special. These versions were mostly for children.
  • Another manga version was created by Ken Ishikawa. This one was published in the Shōnen Captain magazine. This version was aimed at a slightly older audience (teen boys). It was collected into 7 volumes.

Manga Storyline

The manga story by Ken Ishikawa is quite different from the anime. It takes place sixteen years after the heroes Ryouma Nagare, Hayato Jin, and Benkei Kuruma defeated the Hundred Oni Empire.

Now, a new threat has appeared: cyborg-like creatures called Metal Beasts. They are led by the evil Professor Rando from the "Vega Zone." To fight them, Hayato Jin, one of the original heroes, starts a new project. He wants to develop new Getter Machines.

Hayato finds three new young pilots:

  • Go Ichimonji: A talented athlete.
  • Sho Tachibana: The daughter of Professor Tachibana (who leads the Getter-Go project) and a skilled fighter.
  • Gai Daidou: A former mechanic who worked on Getter robots.

These three pilots combine their new Getter Machines to form the super robot known as "Getter Robo Go." They then begin their battle to stop Professor Rando and his Metal Beasts once and for all.

Manga Exclusive Characters

The Ken Ishikawa manga version also features some characters that are not in the anime. These include:

  • Hayato Jin
  • Ryoma Nagare
  • Kei Minamikaze
  • Schwartz Koff
  • Messiah Tahir
  • Empress Jatego

This manga also introduced the famous Shin Getter Robo in its final volume. This powerful robot would later appear in other Getter Robo animated shows.
