Gettnau was once a municipality (a type of town or local area) in Switzerland. It was located in the canton of Lucerne, specifically in the Willisau district. On January 1, 2021, Gettnau joined with the nearby town of Willisau and is now part of it.

Gettnau covered an area of about 6.06 square kilometers (or about 2.34 square miles). This information comes from surveys done between 2004 and 2009.
How Gettnau's Land Is Used
A big part of Gettnau's land, about 52.5%, was used for farming. Forests covered a good portion too, about 36.2% of the area. Buildings and roads took up about 10.5% of the land. Only a small part, 0.8%, was unproductive land, like rocky areas.
Over the years, from 1979 to 2009, the amount of land with buildings grew by about 10 hectares (which is like 25 acres). At the same time, the amount of land used for farming went down by about 9 hectares (or 22 acres).
In 1997, a detailed land survey showed that 37.13% of the land was forest. For farming, 50.17% was used for crops or pastures. A small part, 2.48%, was for orchards or vineyards.
When it came to settled areas, 2.97% had buildings, and 2.15% was for factories or industrial use. Roads and other transport areas made up 3.96%.

From 2010 to 2013, Gettnau's population grew a little, by about 1.67%. In 2013, for every 1,000 people, about 11.6 babies were born. And about 5.8 people passed away.
Most people in Gettnau speak German. In 2000, about 89.0% of the population spoke German. The next most common language was Albanian (5.2%), followed by Portuguese (1.4%).
