Ghilarza (pronounced Gee-LAR-tza), also known as Ilàrtzi in the local Sardinian language, is a small town in the Sardinia region of Italy. It is located in the Province of Oristano. Ghilarza is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Cagliari, which is the capital city of Sardinia. It is also about 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of Oristano.
Ghilarza is known for being the home of Antonio Gramsci for a period of his life. He was an important Italian thinker and politician. He helped start the Italian Communist Party. Gramsci lived with his family in Ghilarza from around 1897 to 1908.
Interestingly, the family of American astronaut Wally Schirra came from Ghilarza. His ancestors lived here before they moved to Switzerland and then to the USA.
The town has some cool old buildings to see. One is the San Palmerio church, built in the 13th century. It's made of white and black stone in a style called Romanesque. There's also the Aragonese Tower, which dates back to the 15th century.
History of Ghilarza
Early Settlements
The town of Ghilarza has a very long history. It was first settled during the Nuragic period. This was a time in ancient Sardinia when people built special stone towers called nuraghi.
Ancient Rulers
After the Nuragic period, Ghilarza was ruled by different groups. First, the Phoenicians came, who were traders from the Middle East. Then, the Romans took control, making it part of their huge empire. Later, the Byzantine Empire ruled the area.
Medieval Independence
During the Middle Ages, Ghilarza became part of the Giudicato of Arborea. This was one of the four independent kingdoms in Sardinia. These kingdoms managed to gain freedom from the Byzantine Empire.
