Ghulam Mohiyuddin Gilani (born December 1891, died June 22, 1974) was a respected Sufi scholar from Golra Sharif, Pakistan. People often called him Babuji. He followed the Chishti order of Sufism. He was the son of Peer Meher Ali Shah. After his father, he became the spiritual leader, known as sajjada nashin, of the Golra Sharif shrine. He held this important role from 1937 until 1974.

His Education

Ghulam Mohiyuddin started his learning at a young age. He was taught by Qari Abdul Rahman and Maulana Muhammad Ghazi. His father, Peer Meher Ali Shah, watched over his studies.

After finishing his education, Ghulam Mohiyuddin received the khilafat from his father. This meant he was chosen to continue his father's spiritual path. At first, he felt he wasn't ready to take on students, called murids. He thought he didn't have enough spiritual wisdom. But his father told him, "I will be responsible for anyone who becomes your student." After this, he began to accept people as his spiritual followers.

His Beliefs

Like his father, Ghulam Mohiyuddin strongly believed in "Wahdat-ul-Wajood". This idea, from Ibn Arabi, means the "Ultimate Unity of Being". It suggests that everything in the universe is connected to one Divine Will. This Divine Will is eternal and shows itself in all parts of the world.

Ghulam Mohiyuddin also greatly admired Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, a famous poet. He loved Rumi's poetry so much that he made his qawwal (a singer of devotional music) learn almost half of Rumi's long poem, the Masnavi. This poem was then sung at the shrine. His life story says he sometimes called Rumi "Pir-e-Ma," which means "my guide."

His Role in Politics

Ghulam Mohiyuddin supported the Pakistan Movement. This was a movement to create a separate country for Muslims in British India. He encouraged people in his area to support the idea of Pakistan. This was especially important around the time of the Partition of India, when India and Pakistan became separate nations.
