Gianluca Bezzina (born 9 November 1989) is a Maltese medical doctor and singer. He is known for representing Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. This big music contest happened in Malmö, Sweden.

About Gianluca Bezzina

Gianluca Bezzina was born in 1989 in Qrendi, Malta. He is one of seven children in his family. Many members of his family are also musical. His family even sang the song "Tomorrow" on TVM (Malta).

Gianluca's grandfather, Gaetano Buttigieg, was a famous person in Malta. He was one of the first to use the Maltese language in pop music. In the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Gaetano wrote Maltese words for popular international songs.

Gianluca's Music Journey

Gianluca started learning music at age seven. He studied the piano accordion and also sang with the Malta Children's Choir. His grandfather, Gaetano, always encouraged him to sing.

Gianluca was also inspired by Roman Catholic youth groups. He still attends these groups regularly. They often have religious music events and celebrations.

With Funk Initiative

Gianluca was the lead singer for a band called Funk Initiative. They released three songs, including "The Liberators" and "Paris." These songs were played on local radio and even reached the top of the charts.

In 2014, Funk Initiative won the Isle Of MTV Battle Of The Bands Competition. This allowed them to open the Isle of MTV concert in Floriana. Gianluca is one of three doctors in this band. The other members are engineers and an accounts teacher.

Working as a Doctor and TV Host

Gianluca has been working as a medical doctor since July 2012. In 2014, he also helped host the semi-finals and finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. He hosted with Ira Losco and Moira Delia. Gianluca and Ira Losco sang two duets together.

A Tribute to Grandfather Gaetano

In 2014, Gianluca took part in a special show. It was held at the Teatru Salesjan in Sliema. His sister, Dorothy Bezzina, produced and directed the show. It was a tribute to their grandfather, Gaetano, ten years after he passed away.

Gianluca and other family members sang 24 songs. All the songs were in Maltese. Many were famous international songs with new Maltese words. Their grandfather, "Nannu" Gaetano, had written all the Maltese lyrics.

Singing with L-Aħwa

In 2014, Gianluca and four of his sisters formed a group called "L-Aħwa." This means "The Siblings" in Maltese. They qualified for the semi-final of the Maltese selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Their song was called "Beautiful To Me."

Gianluca won the Maltese national final to represent Malta. He sang the song "Tomorrow" in the contest in Malmö, Sweden. He actually joined the contest just for fun. It was his first time participating. Gianluca was very surprised when he won.

Gianluca did very well in the Eurovision Song Contest. He placed 4th in the semi-final in May 2013. This meant he could go to the final. In the final, he finished in 8th place. Malta received points from 22 different countries.

When Gianluca returned to Malta, he received a hero's welcome. Fans, family, and friends greeted him. His song "Tomorrow" also became the first Maltese Eurovision song to enter the UK Singles Chart. It reached number 37.

Later Music and TV Appearances

Eurovision Selection 2015 and First Album

In November 2014, Gianluca tried again to represent Malta in Eurovision. He was part of the group L-Aħwa. The group included his sisters Dorothy, Samaria, Vincienne, and Francesca, and his brother Paul. Their song was "Beautiful to Me."

In 2016, Gianluca released his album called Waiting for Tomorrow.

TV Shows: The Voice Kids Malta and X Factor Malta

In 2022, Gianluca was a coach on the Maltese version of The Voice Kids. In 2023, he became a judge on X Factor Malta.

Personal Views

Gianluca has shared his personal views on values and morals. He believes that some traditional ideas are changing quickly. He has stated that he is not closely connected to any political party. He has also never shown interest in becoming a politician.
