Gil Noble (born February 22, 1932 – died April 5, 2012) was an American television reporter and interviewer. He was best known for hosting and producing a weekly TV show called Like It Is. This show was on New York City's WABC-TV station.

Like It Is focused on important topics for African Americans and people of African descent around the world. Gil Noble was born in Harlem, New York, and his parents were immigrants from Jamaica. He went to the City College of New York.

Gil Noble's Journalism Journey

Gil Noble started his career in broadcasting in 1962. He got a part-time job as an announcer at WLIB radio. There, he began reading and reporting the news.

In July 1967, Noble joined WABC-TV as a reporter. He had reported on the 1967 Newark riots before this. By January 1968, he became a news anchor for the station's weekend newscasts.

Hosting Like It Is

A few months later, in 1968, Gil Noble became the host of Like It Is. This show became very important for discussing issues affecting African Americans. He also sometimes interviewed people on other public affairs shows for WABC. From 1986 onwards, Noble focused only on Like It Is.

In 1977, he created a special documentary about Paul Robeson. It was called The Tallest Tree in Our Forest. In 1981, he wrote a book about his life called Black is the Color of My TV Tube.

Awards and Recognition

Gil Noble was a very respected journalist. He won seven Emmy Awards for his work. He also received 650 community awards. Many universities gave him honorary doctorate degrees.

He was also a member of the board of directors for the Jazz Foundation of America. He hosted their "A Great Night in Harlem" concerts several times. These concerts helped raise money for musicians in need.

Later Life and Legacy

Gil Noble was born in Harlem. His father, Gilbert, owned an auto repair shop, and his mother, Iris, was a school teacher. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army.

In July 2011, Gil Noble had a stroke. His family announced in September that he would not be able to return to host Like It Is. The show ended its 43-year run the next month. Gil Noble passed away on April 5, 2012, at the age of 80.
