Gila Almagor Agmon, born Gila Alexandrowitz on July 22, 1939, is a famous Israeli actress and writer. Many people in Israel call her the "queen of Israeli cinema and theater" because of her amazing work. She has starred in many films and plays.

About Gila Almagor's Early Life

Gila Almagor was born in Petah Tikva, Israel. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Europe. Her father, Max Alexandrowitz, was a policeman. He was killed before Gila was born.

Gila's mother, Chaya, was from a Polish Jewish family. Sadly, all of her mother's family in Europe were killed during the Holocaust. This was a very difficult time for her mother.

When Gila was 15, her mother needed special care. Gila was then sent to a place called Hadassim youth village. This was a special school for young people.

Two years later, Gila moved to Tel Aviv. She rented a room near the Habima Theatre. She wanted to become an actress. Even though she was very young, she was accepted into acting school.

At 17, Gila started acting at the Habima Theatre. Her first play was The Skin of Our Teeth. Gila has written two books about her own life. These books are called Summer of Aviya and Under the Domim Tree. Both books were made into movies. In the movies, Gila even played her own mother!

Gila was married to Yaakov Agmon. He was a director at the Habima Theatre. They were married until he passed away in 2020. Gila and Yaakov have two children.

Acting on Stage, Film, and TV

Gila Almagor has played many important roles in plays. Some of these plays include Anne Frank, Jeanne d'Arc, and The Crucible. She has also been in over 50 films!

Some of her well-known films are Siege, Queen of the Road, and The House on Chelouche Street. She also appeared in Life According to Agfa and The Summer of Aviya.

In 2005, Gila starred in the movie Munich. She played the mother of the main character, Avner. She also appeared in The Debt. This movie is about a former spy.

Gila also acted in a TV show called Dani Hollywood. In 2005, she played a therapist in the Israeli TV series BeTipul. This show won many awards.

Helping Others: Charity Work

Gila Almagor cares a lot about helping people. She started a charity called the Gila Almagor Wish Fund. This fund helps sick children.

She also helped create AMI. This is the Israeli Artist Association. Gila works to promote art for children. She also helps connect Israeli artists with people from other countries. She is part of the City Council of Tel Aviv.

Awards and Special Honors

Gila Almagor has won many awards for her acting. She has received 10 Kinor David awards for her work in films and plays.

In 1996, she received a Life Achievement Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival. The Israeli Academy of Cinema also gave her a Life Achievement Award in 1997. She won the Silver Bear award for best actress for her role in Summer of Aviya at the Berlin Film Festival.

In 1995, Gila received a National Jewish Book Award for her book Under the Domin Tree.

In 1990, a newspaper called Yediot Ahronoth and the Israel Film Institute chose her as the "Actress of the Decade." This means she was the best actress of the past ten years!

In 2004, Gila was given the Israel Prize. This is one of the highest honors in Israel. She received it for her work in cinema. In 2005, she became a Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadorship. This was for her work with children's stories.

In 2009, two universities, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Tel Aviv University, gave her an Honorary Doctorate. This is a special degree given to people who have achieved great things.
