The Story of Gilat
How Gilat Started
Gilat was founded in 1949. It was started by Jewish people who had to leave their homes in Tunisia, an Arab country. They came to Israel to build a new life.
Where the Name Comes From
The name Gilat means "Joy." This name, like others in the area, comes from an old book called the Book of Isaiah in the Bible. It says:
The desert will blossom and be filled with joy and singing.
This quote talks about a desert becoming full of life and happiness.
Famous People from Gilat
Some important people have lived in Gilat. One was Aharon Uzan, who worked as a government minister for Israel in the 1960s and 1980s. A government minister is like a leader in charge of a specific part of the country's work. Another notable person was Pini Badash, who was a member of the Knesset.
