Gilbert's Early Life and Family History
Gilbert was unique because he connected many old family lines. These lines were from different parts of a region called Auvergne in France. Over time, Auvergne had been divided into three main areas. These were a countship, a dukedom, and a dauphinate. Gilbert's family had ties to all three.
His grandmother, Marie of Berry, was the Duchess of Bourbon. She inherited the lands of the duchy of Auvergne. These lands had been taken from an earlier count of Auvergne. This happened a long time ago, by King Philip II of France.
Gilbert's great-grandmother, Anne of Auvergne, was also important. She was the daughter of the Dauphin of Auvergne. A "Dauphin" was a special title for a ruler in some French regions. When her brother's family line ended, Anne became the heiress. This meant her descendants, like Gilbert, could claim those lands.
Gilbert was not the first in line for all these titles. But as a leader of a younger branch of his family, he received some lands. These included Montpensier and the dauphinate. These were given to him as an appanage. An appanage is land given to younger members of a royal family.
Gilbert's Marriage and Children

On February 24, 1482, Gilbert married Clara Gonzaga. Clara was born on July 1, 1464, and died on June 2, 1503. She was the daughter of Federico I of Gonzaga from Mantua, a city in Italy.
Gilbert and Clara had six children:
- Louise, Duchess of Montpensier (born 1482 – died July 15, 1561). She later inherited many Bourbon family estates.
- Louis II, Count of Montpensier (born 1483 – died August 14, 1501).
- Charles III, Duke of Bourbon (born February 17, 1490 – died May 6, 1527). He died in battle.
- François, Duke of Châtellerault (born 1492 – died September 13, 1515). He died at the Battle of Marignano.
- Renée, Lady of Mercœur (born 1494 – died May 26, 1539). She married Antoine, Duke of Lorraine on June 26, 1515. Their wedding was at the Château d'Amboise.
- Anne (born 1495 – died 1510). She passed away in Spain.
Gilbert's Role as Viceroy of Naples
In 1495, King Charles VIII of France took control of the city of Naples in Italy. After this, Gilbert was appointed as the Viceroy of Naples. A Viceroy is a ruler who governs a country or province as the representative of a king.
However, Gilbert's time as Viceroy was short. In July 1496, he and the remaining French soldiers were captured. This happened at a place called Atella. Gilbert and his men were held in a swampy area near Pozzuoli. This area was known for diseases like malaria. Gilbert later died there on October 15, 1496.
