Gilbert L. "Whip" Wilson is an important leader from New Jersey. He was born on March 17, 1947. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Since December 2015, he has been the sheriff of Camden County, New Jersey.
Before becoming sheriff, he was a representative in the New Jersey General Assembly. He served there from 2010 until 2015. While in the Assembly, he represented the 5th Legislative District. Mr. Wilson also worked as a councilman for the City of Camden. He was a councilman from 1997 to 2000, and again from 2005 to 2010.

Gilbert L. Wilson was born and grew up in Camden, New Jersey. He finished Camden High School in 1965.
Military Service
After high school, Mr. Wilson joined the United States Air Force. He served from 1965 to 1969. His time in the Air Force included serving in Thailand and Vietnam. He received several awards for his service. These awards included the Air Force Commendation Medal. He also received the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.
Police Career
After leaving the Air Force, Mr. Wilson became a police officer. He joined the Camden Police Department. While working as a police officer, he continued his education. He attended Camden County College. He also studied at Glassboro State College. This school is now known as Rowan University. He earned a bachelor's degree in law and criminal justice.
Mr. Wilson worked as a police officer for over 26 years. He retired with the rank of lieutenant. During his time, he led the Vice Unit. He also supervised the first Community Policing Unit.
Public Service and Politics
Mr. Wilson began his political career in Camden. He was elected as a councilman for the Camden City Council in May 1997. He served in this role until July 2001. He returned to the City Council in July 2005.
In January 2010, Mr. Wilson was chosen to join the New Jersey General Assembly. He filled a vacant seat. He was sworn into office on January 25, 2010. While in the Assembly, he worked on important committees. He was the vice-chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. He also served on the Law and Public Safety Committee. He was a member of the Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee.
In 2015, Mr. Wilson decided to run for Sheriff of Camden County. He won the election in November. He then resigned from his Assembly seat on December 2, 2015. This allowed him to become the Sheriff. He has been serving as Sheriff of Camden County since December 2015.
