Professional Basketball Career
Starting with the Golden State Warriors (2001–2003)
Arenas was chosen by the Golden State Warriors in the 2001 NBA draft. He was the 31st pick overall. He wore the number 0 on his jersey. This was a reminder of how some experts thought he would play "zero" minutes in the NBA.
Gilbert made his NBA debut on November 4, 2001. He scored his first points a few days later. He quickly became an important player for the Warriors. In his second season (2002–03), Arenas won the NBA Most Improved Player Award. He averaged 18.3 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game. He also won the Most Valuable Player award in the Rookie-Sophomore game during the NBA All-Star Weekend.
Becoming a Star with the Washington Wizards (2003–2010)
After his time with the Warriors, Arenas signed a big contract with the Washington Wizards. He became the main player for the team.
First All-Star Season (2004–05)
In the 2004–05 season, Arenas was healthy and played very well. He teamed up with Larry Hughes. They became one of the highest-scoring duos in the NBA. Arenas was chosen for his first NBA All-Star Game. He led the Wizards to 45 wins and their first playoff appearance since 1997. He averaged 25.5 points per game.
In the playoffs, Arenas made a game-winning shot against the Chicago Bulls. This helped the Wizards win their first playoff series in over 20 years. They later lost to the Miami Heat.
Continued Success (2005–07)
Arenas continued to shine in the 2005–06 season. He averaged 29.3 points per game. He was named an All-Star again. He also participated in the Three-point Shootout. Arenas was known for making exciting shots. One memorable shot was a 40-foot jump shot in the 2006 playoffs.
In the 2006–07 season, Arenas had an amazing game against the Los Angeles Lakers. He scored a career-high 60 points. This set a new record for the Wizards franchise. He also made several game-winning shots at the buzzer. These included shots against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Utah Jazz. He was voted a starter for the 2007 NBA All-Star game.
Injuries and Challenges (2007–10)
Towards the end of the 2006–07 season, Arenas tore a ligament in his knee. This injury affected his playing time in the following seasons. He played only a few games in the 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons.
In 2008, Arenas signed a new, long-term contract with the Wizards. He wanted to stay with the team. However, his injuries continued to be a challenge.
In the 2009–10 season, Arenas faced serious off-court issues. These issues led to him being suspended by the NBA for most of the season. When he returned for the 2010–11 season, he changed his jersey number from 0 to 9. He did this to put the past behind him.
Moving to Orlando and Memphis (2010–2012)
In December 2010, Arenas was traded to the Orlando Magic. He played as a backup point guard. The Magic made the playoffs but lost in the first round. In 2011, Arenas was waived by the Magic. This meant his contract was ended early.
In March 2012, Arenas signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. He again played as a backup point guard. The Grizzlies made the playoffs but lost in the first round. This was Arenas' final season in the NBA. He was 30 years old.
