Gilbert Earl Patterson (born September 22, 1939 – died March 20, 2007) was an important American religious leader. He was a pastor and a bishop in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), which is a large Christian church. Bishop Patterson also started a group called Bountiful Blessings Ministries. He was known for his powerful sermons and for sharing his faith through television.
Bishop Patterson became the main leader, called the Presiding Bishop, of COGIC when he was 60 years old in 2000. This was a very important job in the church. He was the second youngest person to get this role. His uncle, Bishop J. O. Patterson, Sr., was the youngest at 56 years old.
Honored by the U.S. Senate
After his death, the United States Senate honored Bishop Patterson. On March 28, 2007, they passed a special resolution. This resolution celebrated his life and his many contributions. Several important senators supported this honor. These included Barack Obama, Carl Levin, John Kerry, Lamar Alexander, and Bob Corker.
