Humboldt is a city in Tennessee, located in both Gibson and Madison counties. In 2020, about 7,874 people lived there. Humboldt is the main city in its local area. It is also part of the larger Jackson-Henderson-Humboldt Metropolitan Area.

History of Humboldt
The first people to settle in the area that would become Humboldt arrived in the mid-1850s. Humboldt grew because of the railroads. It became a "Railroad town" when two major train lines, the Mobile & Ohio and the Memphis & Ohio, crossed paths there in 1859. The town was officially recognized as a city in 1866, after the American Civil War.
The city was named after Alexander von Humboldt, a famous German scientist who studied nature.
Humboldt's Geography
Humboldt is located at 35°49′21″N 88°54′40″W / 35.822564°N 88.911138°W. Most of the city is in Gibson County. Only a small part of it extends into Madison County. For example, in 2000, nearly all residents lived in Gibson County.
The city covers a total area of about 9.7 square miles (25.0 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny bit is water.

Two main roads, U.S. Route 79 and U.S. Route 45W, meet in Humboldt. A major highway, Interstate 40, is about 13 miles (21 km) away in Jackson. Another highway, Interstate 155, is about 36 miles (58 km) away in Dyersburg.
Air Travel
Humboldt has its own airport, the Humboldt Municipal Airport. It is located in Gibson County. For bigger flights, the closest airports are Memphis International. That airport is about 90 miles (145 km) away. Nashville International is further, about 150 miles (241 km) away.
Train Travel
If you want to travel by train, the Newbern–Dyersburg train station is about 36 miles (58 km) away in Newbern. The Memphis Central Station is about 90 miles (145 km) away.
