Gilbert Talbot, 1st Baron Talbot (born around 1276 or 1277, died 1346) was an important English nobleman. He was the very first person in his family to be called a Baron Talbot. His family later became the Earls of Shrewsbury, a very important title in England.

Gilbert Talbot's Family Background

Gilbert Talbot was the son of Richard Talbot and Sarah Beauchamp. His father, Richard, was a powerful landowner in a place called Eccleswall. He was also the Sheriff of Gloucestershire, which meant he was in charge of law and order for that area.

The Talbot family came from Herefordshire, a county in England. They had received land from King Henry II many years before. This showed they were an important family.

Gilbert's grandmother, Gwenllian, was the daughter of a Welsh prince named Rhys Mechyll. This connection meant the Talbots had ties to important Welsh families too.

Gilbert took over his father's lands and titles in 1306. He was about 29 years old at the time. Gilbert Talbot married Anne Boteler, the daughter of William Boteler.

Challenges During King Edward II's Reign

Gilbert Talbot lived during a difficult time in England. The king, Edward II, had two close friends who were very unpopular with many noblemen. These friends were Piers de Gaveston and Hugh Despenser.

Gilbert Talbot sided with the noblemen who were against these friends of the king. He was even involved in the events that led to Gaveston's death, but he was later forgiven.

Even after this, in 1317, Gilbert was put in charge of Gloucester Castle. However, he later joined a rebellion led by Thomas of Lancaster against Despenser. When this rebellion failed, Gilbert was ordered to pay a large fine. He also had to give up his control of Gloucester Castle to Despenser.

Serving King Edward III

Luckily for Gilbert Talbot, he never had to pay the large fine. When Edward III became king, he cancelled all the penalties against Gilbert.

King Edward III trusted Gilbert Talbot. In 1328, Gilbert was given an important job called Lord Chamberlain. This role meant he was a senior officer in the royal household. In 1330, he became the Justice of South Wales, which meant he was a judge in that area.

Gilbert Talbot was first asked to attend Parliament on June 5, 1331. He continued to be called to Parliament until April 20, 1343. Being called to Parliament like this meant he officially became a baron by writ. This made him the first person to hold the title of Baron Talbot.

Gilbert Talbot's Later Life and Legacy

Gilbert Talbot passed away in 1346. His son, Richard Talbot, inherited his titles and lands. Richard became the 2nd Baron Talbot, continuing his family's important legacy.
