Richard Talbot, 2nd Baron Talbot (born around 1306 – died 1356), was an important English nobleman and soldier. He became a powerful figure because he married Elizabeth de Comyn, who was an heiress. He played a part in the wars between England and Scotland.

Early Life and Family

Richard Talbot was the son of Gilbert Talbot, 1st Baron Talbot. His mother was Anne Boteler. In 1331, Richard's father became the first Baron Talbot. This meant he was given a special title by the King.

The Talbot family was important in the area of Herefordshire, England. They had been respected landowners, known as "gentry," for a long time. They also had connections to important Welsh families. When his father died in 1346, Richard became the 2nd Baron Talbot.

Richard married Elizabeth Comyn. Her father was John de Comyn. Elizabeth was set to inherit many lands in both England and Scotland. One of these important places was Goodrich Castle. However, her father's lands in Scotland had been taken by Robert I of Scotland, also known as Robert the Bruce.

Conflicts in England and Scotland

Like his father, Richard Talbot was part of a group of nobles who were against a powerful advisor to the King, named Hugh Despenser the Younger. Richard joined Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, in a rebellion against Edward II of England. Richard was captured during a battle.

After Despenser lost his power, Richard Talbot took back Goodrich Castle. This castle had been taken from his wife, Elizabeth Comyn, by Despenser. From 1331 to 1355, Richard was called to meetings of Parliament as "Richard Talbot of Goodrich Castle."

Richard Talbot also supported Edward Balliol. Balliol was trying to become the King of Scotland. Richard was one of the "Disinherited." This was a group of people who had lost their lands in Scotland. When Balliol invaded Scotland in 1332, Richard was with him. He fought in the Battle of Dupplin Moor.

Balliol gave Richard control of Kildrummy Castle. He also named Richard the Earl of Mar in 1334. This showed how much Balliol valued his support. However, Richard did not keep this title for long. By 1335, he was just called "Sir Richard Talbot, Knight."

In 1334, Richard was captured by William Keith while trying to travel to England. He was later set free after a payment, known as a ransom. In 1337, he was put in charge of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. He also helped manage English lands in Scotland until 1340.

Fighting in the Hundred Years' War

Later, Richard Talbot fought for Edward III of England in the Hundred Years War. This was a long series of conflicts between England and France.

In 1342, he served as a leader in the Battle of Morlaix. He was also hurt before the famous Battle of Crécy in 1346. Despite his injury, he fought in that battle. He also took part in the Siege of Calais.

Death and Legacy

Richard Talbot died on October 23, 1356. His son, Gilbert Talbot, 3rd Baron Talbot, inherited his lands and titles.
