Gilbert Talbot, 3rd Baron Talbot (born around 1332 – died 1387) was an important English nobleman and a brave soldier. He lived during a time when England was often at war.

Who Was Gilbert Talbot?
Gilbert Talbot was the son of Richard Talbot, 2nd Baron Talbot and Elizabeth de Comyn. His family, the Talbots, were well-known in Herefordshire, England. They had been important landowners since the time of King Henry II of England. The Talbots also had family ties to noble families in Wales and Scotland. When Gilbert's father passed away in 1356, Gilbert became the 3rd Baron Talbot.
A Life as a Soldier
Gilbert Talbot spent much of his life serving England as a soldier. He took part in several military campaigns.
Fighting in the Hundred Years' War
He fought in the famous Hundred Years War against France. He served under a famous leader called the Black Prince. Gilbert also sailed with the royal navy, led by Admiral Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk.
Facing the Peasants' Revolt
During the Peasants' Revolt, a big uprising in England, Gilbert Talbot helped the king. He was one of the officials who gathered soldiers to fight against the rebels.
Campaigns in Portugal and Spain
Later, Gilbert traveled to Portugal and Spain. He served there from 1381 to 1382 under the Earl of Cambridge. He was present when the English forces captured a place called Higuera la Real. While in Spain, he was chosen to speak for the English soldiers. His job was to ask the King of Portugal to pay the soldiers their wages.
Service Against Scotland
After returning to England, Gilbert was called to Newcastle in 1385. This was to help defend England against attacks from the Scots.
Final Campaign in Spain
In 1386, Gilbert went back to Spain with John of Gaunt. John of Gaunt was trying to claim the throne of Castile, a kingdom in Spain. Sadly, Gilbert Talbot died in Spain in 1387. He passed away from the plague, a serious illness common at that time.

Gilbert Talbot was married two times during his life.
First Marriage and Children
Before 1361, he married a woman named Petronilla. She was the daughter of James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormond and Eleanor de Bohun. Gilbert and Petronilla had two children:
- Richard Talbot, 4th Baron Talbot: He became the next Baron Talbot after his father. Richard is an ancestor of Queen Catherine Parr. She was the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII.
- Elizabeth Talbot: She married Henry Grey, 5th Baron Grey de Wilton.
Second Marriage
Gilbert's second wife was Joan. She was the daughter of Ralph de Stafford, 1st Earl of Stafford and Margaret de Audley, 2nd Baroness Audley.
Gilbert's Legacy
Gilbert Talbot passed away on April 24, 1387. His son, Richard, became the 4th Baron Talbot. Gilbert left behind some financial challenges for his family. These money problems continued to affect the Talbot family even during the time of his grandson, the fifth baron.
