A Look Back at Gilliam's Past

The Big Tornado of 1908

On May 13, 1908, a very strong tornado hit the community of Gilliam. It was around dinnertime. The storm was very powerful and destroyed most of the town. Only two homes were left standing. Sadly, 34 people in Gilliam lost their lives. The tornado also killed 15 more people in nearby towns.

Gilliam is located in the northeastern part of Caddo Parish. You can find it at coordinates 32.827585 degrees North and 93.844388 degrees West.

U.S. Route 71 runs along the west side of the village. This road can take you south about 4 miles (6.4 km) to Belcher. If you keep going, it's about 22 miles (35 km) to Shreveport. If you head north on US 71, it's about 4 miles (6.4 km) to Hosston and 14 miles (23 km) to the Arkansas border.
