Belcher is a small village located in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. A village is a community that is smaller than a town. In 2020, about 248 people lived there. Belcher is part of the larger Shreveport-Bossier City area.

History of Belcher

Belcher was once called Horseshoe. This name came from a bayou, which is a slow-moving stream or marshy area, that flows through the village. In 1899, the village was renamed Belcher. It was named after James Clinton Belcher. He was a person who managed a large farm called Wild Lucia plantation.

Geography and Location

Belcher is in the northeastern part of Caddo Parish. A parish in Louisiana is like a county in other states. The village is less than 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of the Red River.

U.S. Route 71 goes through the western side of Belcher. This road can take you north about 5 miles (8 km) to Gilliam. It also goes south about 17 miles (27 km) to Shreveport. Another major road, Interstate 49, is about 3 miles (5 km) west of the village center.
