Hosston's History

Hosston, Louisiana, started because of the Hoss family. James M. Hoss Sr. was very important in founding and developing the village. Other people like Noah Tyson and George W. Hale also helped Hosston grow.

The village's story goes back to the mid-1800s. Nathan Hoss, a merchant, settled in the area early on. His son, James M. Hoss Sr., later helped the town develop a lot. James and other Hoss family members came from Tennessee and helped the settlement grow.

James Hoss was a well-known commissioner. He worked with Noah Tyson, who helped develop much of Rodessa, Louisiana. These two worked together to improve the area's roads and buildings.

Historical records show that James Hoss and Noah Tyson had a store together. There is even a park named Noah Tyson Park on Mira Myrtis Road, which reminds people of his work.

James Hoss was very important, but his cousin, George W. Hale, also helped Hosston a lot. George's work in the early 1900s was key to the village's progress. On May 16, 1890, the Hale Post Office opened. James Hale was the Postmaster. He delivered mail to people living near Black Bayou Lake.

As more people moved to Hosston, the village grew. It gained more buildings and skilled workers. Because the population grew, Hosston needed a post office, a high school, and other community buildings. This showed the town was growing and had a bright future.

Today, many descendants of Nathan's grandfather, Jacob Hoss of Tennessee, still live around the Hosston area.
