Giovanni Baronzio, also known as Giovanni da Rimini, was an Italian painter. He lived in the 1300s. He worked in the Romagna and Marche regions of Italy. Baronzio was an important artist from the Rimini school of painting. This school was greatly influenced by the famous painter Giotto.

About His Life

We don't know exactly when Giovanni Baronzio was born. We know he died before 1362. His tomb was found in a church in Rimini. One of his paintings, called Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints, has his name on it. It says "Johannes Barontius." This painting was originally in a church in Macerata Feltria. A document from 1343 mentions "Iohanne Baroncio pictore." This means "John Baronzio, painter." This is the only official record we have of him. Experts believe Baronzio started painting around 1320. He might have learned from Giotto's style, but not directly from Giotto himself.

Scenes from the Life of Christ

The painting Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints is very important. It helps us understand Baronzio's other works. Another famous work is his Scenes from the Life of Christ. This painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It shows that Baronzio was a skilled artist. He used many soft and beautiful colors. Baronzio paid close attention to small details in his paintings. He also used bright colors and patterns. This was common for artists in the Rimini school at that time. Baronzio was one of several painters from Rimini in the 1300s. Other artists included Giuliano, Pietro, and Giovanni. The work of these artists was greatly influenced by Giotto. Giotto had visited and worked in Rimini.
