Pietro da Rimini was an Italian painter who worked between 1315 and 1335. He was active in the early 14th century.

About Pietro da Rimini

Pietro was born in a city called Rimini in Italy. He lived at the same time as other painters like Giovanni and Giuliano da Rimini. Pietro mostly worked in the Marche region of Italy.

His art was greatly inspired by the famous painter Giotto. Giotto had visited Rimini around 1303. Pietro might have even worked in Giotto's art studio, but we don't know for sure. Pietro was also influenced by the Sienese school, especially by another artist named Pietro Lorenzetti.

His Artworks

Several paintings are believed to be by Pietro da Rimini. Even if they look a bit different from each other, they are thought to be his work.

Some of his famous pieces include:

  • A painting called Deposition from the Cross, which is now in the Louvre museum in Paris.
  • Wall paintings (frescoes) in the Basilica di San Nicola da Tolentino.
  • Frescoes in the dining hall (refectory) of the Pomposa Abbey.
  • A fresco of St. Francis from 1333 in the church of Montottone.

Wall paintings from a chapel in the old Santa Chiara church in Ravenna can now be seen at the National Museum of Ravenna.

Pietro da Rimini likely passed away sometime after the year 1340.
