Life of a Painter
Giovanni Carnovali was born in Montegrino Valtravaglia, a small town in Italy. From a very young age, he showed a great talent for drawing. When he was just 11 years old, he was accepted into the Carrara Academy in Bergamo. This was a special art school.
His first big public painting was called The Education of the Virgin. He finished this painting in 1826. A church in Almenno San Bartolomeo asked him to paint it. In 1836, Carnovali moved to Milan, a big city in Italy. He also taught art to other students, including a painter named Tranquillo Cremona.
Carnovali was known for being a bit different. He loved to spend hours quietly looking at landscapes. He also enjoyed taking very long walks. In 1831, he walked all the way from northern Italy to Rome and back! He even walked to Paris in 1845. He liked to be by himself and sometimes did not answer his studio door. Carnovali died in 1873 while swimming in the Po River near Cremona.
