Giovanni Lodetti (born August 10, 1942 – died September 22, 2023) was a famous Italian football player. He played as a midfielder, a position in the middle of the field. Giovanni was known for being a very hard-working player. He often helped his team by defending and getting the ball back. He was good at understanding the game and had lots of energy. Even though he focused on defense, he was also skilled with the ball and could help with attacks. He even scored goals sometimes!

Playing for Clubs

Giovanni Lodetti is best known for his time playing for the Italian club Milan. He played there for many years in the 1960s. During this time, he won many important trophies both in Italy and around the world. He played alongside another great player, Gianni Rivera.

  • He helped Milan win the top Italian league, Serie A, two times. One of these wins was in his very first season!
  • They also won the Coppa Italia, which is Italy's main cup competition.
  • On the international stage, he won the European Cup twice. This is one of the biggest club competitions in Europe.
  • He also won the Cup Winners' Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. The Intercontinental Cup was a match between the best teams from Europe and South America.

After leaving Milan, Giovanni Lodetti played for other Italian teams. These included Sampdoria, Foggia, and Novara. He stopped playing professional football in 1978.

Playing for Italy

Giovanni Lodetti also played for the Italian national team. He was part of the squad for the 1966 FIFA World Cup held in England. Italy did not go far in that tournament.

However, he was a key player when Italy won the UEFA Euro 1968 tournament. This big competition was played in Italy, and they won it on their home ground.

He was almost part of the team for the 1970 FIFA World Cup, where Italy reached the final. But he had to miss out at the last minute due to an injury. The coach decided to call up other players instead. In total, he played 17 games for Italy between 1964 and 1968 and scored two goals. He also played for Italy's under-21 team and won a gold medal at the 1963 Mediterranean Games.
