Gistel (pronounced GISS-tel) is a lovely city and municipality in Belgium. It is located in the province of West Flanders.
Over the years, Gistel has grown to include other nearby towns. In 1971 and 1977, the towns of Moere, Snaaskerke, and Zevekote became part of the Gistel municipality.
As of January 1, 2006, Gistel had a total population of 11,125 people. More than 8,000 of these people lived in Gistel itself. The total area of the municipality is about 42.25 square kilometers. This means there are about 263 people living in each square kilometer. Gistel also has a twin town in Germany, which is the town of Büdingen.

Gistel is known for being the home of some famous athletes. These people have made a name for themselves in the world of cycling.
Cycling Champions
The most famous person from Gistel is Sylvère Maes. He was a very successful cyclist. Sylvère Maes won the famous Tour de France bicycle race twice. He won it in 1936 and again in 1939.
Another well-known cyclist who used to live in Gistel is Johan Museeuw. He is now retired from cycling. Johan Museeuw is famous for winning the tough Paris–Roubaix race three times.
Museum for Cyclists
In 2011, a special museum opened in Gistel. This museum celebrates the achievements of both Sylvère Maes and Johan Museeuw. It honors their contributions to the sport of cycling.
