Gitwinksihlkw (pronounced "GIT-win-silk") was once known as Canyon City. It is a Nisga'a Village located in the Nass River valley in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. This village is close to where the Nass River meets the Tseax River. You can reach Gitwinksihlkw by driving on the Nisga'a Highway.
Gitwinksihlkw is one of four main Nisga'a villages. The name "Gitwinksihlkw" means "people of the lizard's habitat". This name comes from a time when many salamanders lived in the area. This was before the Tseax Cone volcano erupted in the 1700s. That eruption covered nearby villages like Wii Lax K'abit and Lax̱ Ksiluux with lava.
About Gitwinksihlkw
Gitwinksihlkw is a small community with a population of about 200 people. It is part of the Nisga'a Nation, an Indigenous group in British Columbia. The Nisga'a people have lived in this area for thousands of years. Their government, the Nisga'a Lisims Government, helps manage the village.

The Tseax Volcano and Lava Beds
The area around Gitwinksihlkw has a unique history because of the Tseax Cone volcano. This volcano erupted a long time ago, creating a large lava flow. This lava flow is now part of the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park. This park is a special place that protects the lava beds and teaches visitors about the Nisga'a culture and the volcanic history.
