School District 92 Nisga'a is a special school district located in British Columbia, Canada. It's found in the beautiful Nass River valley. This district serves the First Nations communities of the Nisga'a people. These communities are north of Terrace.
The Nisga'a School District includes several villages. These are Gitlaxt'aamiks (also called New Aiyansh), Gitwinksihlkw (or Canyon City), Laxgalts'ap (or Greenville), and Gingolx (or Kincolith). It also covers the smaller areas around these main communities.
History of the Nisga'a School District
School District 92 Nisga'a was created on January 1, 1975. This was a very important event. It became the very first Indigenous school district in the province of British Columbia. This means it was run by and for the Nisga'a people.
Over the years, the number of students in the district has changed. In September 2010, there were 422 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The schools vary in size. The smallest elementary school had 46 students. The largest school, which includes both elementary and secondary grades, had 241 students.
The district also helps students with special learning needs. About 44 students receive extra support for their education. Many students, around 212, also get help with their English language skills. This is because English might not be their first language.
Schools in the District
The Nisga'a School District has four main schools for children and teens. These schools are located in different communities within the Nisga'a Nation. They teach students from Kindergarten up to Grade 12.
