About Lax̱g̱altsʼap
Lax̱g̱altsʼap is an important part of the Nisg̱a’a Lisims. This is the official name for the Nisg̱a’a territory. The Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government helps to lead and manage the community.
What's in a Name?
The name Lax̱g̱altsʼap comes from the Nisg̱a’a language. It means "village on village." This is because the current village was built on top of a much older one. The older village was called Gitxatʼin. It was sadly destroyed by a fire long ago.
Lax̱g̱altsʼap also used to have an English name, Greenville. This name came from a missionary named Alfred Green. He worked in the area in the late 1800s.
For a long time, the village was known as Lachkaltsap Indian Reserve No. 9. But in 2000, things changed. The Nisg̱a’a Treaty made it a Nisg̱a’a Village again. This treaty is a very important agreement for the Nisg̱a’a people.
