Playing Career Highlights
Giuseppe Galderisi played for many Italian teams during his career. He scored nearly 200 goals across different Italian football leagues.
Starting at Juventus
Galderisi started his professional journey with Juventus, a very famous club. He made his first team debut in August 1980 in a cup match. His first league game in Serie A was in November 1980.
Even though he didn't score a lot of goals at Juventus, he scored some very important ones. In the 1981–82 season, he scored three goals in one game against Milan. That season, Juventus won the league title. He also won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) with Juventus in 1983. In total, he scored 6 goals in 16 games for Juventus.
Success with Hellas Verona
After Juventus, Galderisi joined Hellas Verona in 1983. Here, he started scoring more goals. In the 1984–85 season, he was one of the best strikers in the league. He scored 11 goals, helping Verona win their first-ever Serie A title. This was a huge achievement for the club.
After Verona, he played for Milan (1986–87) and Lazio (1987–88). He also returned to Verona for a second time (1988–89). However, injuries made it hard for him to play as well as he had before.
Time at Padova
In 1989, he joined Padova and stayed there until 1995. He had several good seasons with Padova in Serie B, which is the second division of Italian football.
Playing in Major League Soccer
In 1996, a new football league called Major League Soccer (MLS) started in the United States. The league assigned well-known players to each of its ten teams.
Joining New England Revolution
On February 5, 1996, Galderisi was assigned to the New England Revolution for their first season. His former teammate from Milan, Ray Wilkins, had suggested him to the Revolution's manager. At the Revolution, Galderisi joined Alexi Lalas, another player he knew from Padova.
Galderisi was one of the highest-paid players on the team. The manager described him as a "proven goal-scorer" and a "championship veteran." However, Galderisi found it hard to make a big impact. He played his first game for the Revolution in April 1996. He showed his frustration when he was taken out of a game early, saying the team didn't trust him. The manager later said Galderisi was "not at the level we'd expect." In May, the Revolution decided to let him go.
Moving to Tampa Bay Mutiny
Galderisi then signed with the Tampa Bay Mutiny during the 1996 season. He had much more success with this team. He started 19 games, scoring seven goals and helping with eight assists. He helped the Mutiny win the first-ever MLS Supporters' Shield, which is given to the team with the best regular season record.
In the 1997 season, Galderisi scored five goals and had six assists for Tampa Bay. He was even chosen for the 1997 MLS All-Star Game, where he scored a goal.
Second Time with New England
After the 1996 season, the New England Revolution got a new manager, Thomas Rongen. Rongen had coached Galderisi at Tampa Bay. In August 1997, Galderisi was traded back to the Revolution. He played seven more games for them and also appeared in two playoff matches. He was then released by the Revolution in November.
Playing for Italy
Giuseppe Galderisi was nicknamed Nanu (meaning 'short') during his playing days. He played ten times for the Italian national team between 1985 and 1987. He made his international debut in June 1985. He was also part of Italy's team for the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
How He Played
Galderisi was a quick, agile, and small striker. He was good at scoring goals and had excellent reactions. He was also known for working hard, being generous on the field, and being tough. He could shoot powerfully and accurately with both feet. Even though he was small, he was good at heading the ball because of his timing.
He started his career as a second striker, helping out the main attacker. But he became best as a centre-forward, a main goal scorer, because of his speed and eye for goal. He was determined and always looked for chances to score. However, he often had injuries and sometimes struggled to play his best for bigger teams. He usually performed better at smaller clubs.
Coaching Career
In April 1999, Galderisi became an assistant coach for the New England Revolution. He later turned down the main coaching job there. He started his head coaching career in 2000 with Gubbio, a team in Italy's Serie C2 league.
He then coached other Serie C clubs like Cremonese and Giulianova. In January 2004, he had a health issue but fully recovered. In 2005, he coached Viterbese. From 2006 to 2007, he coached Avellino in Serie C1. Even though his team was doing well, he was let go in April 2007.
In January 2008, Galderisi took over as manager of Foggia. The team's performance improved a lot under him. In July 2008, he became the manager of Pescara. He faced financial problems at the club, and he was dismissed in March 2009.
He continued coaching different teams, including Arezzo (2009–10) and Benevento (2010–11). In October 2011, he signed with U.S. Triestina Calcio. This season was difficult due to money problems, and the club eventually left Italian football.
In July 2012, he became the coach of his hometown club, Salernitana, but he left after only three games. In January 2014, he coached S.C. Olhanense in Portugal, but he couldn't save them from being relegated.
He returned to coaching in Italy in November 2014 with Lucchese. He helped them avoid relegation. He returned to Lucchese again in March 2016 but left in March 2017.
In November 2018, he went back to coach Gubbio, the first club he managed. He left Gubbio in May 2019. In February 2020, he was hired by Vis Pesaro but was fired in November 2020 after a poor start to the season.
In December 2021, Galderisi became the head coach of Mantova. He was dismissed in April 2022. His most recent coaching role was with Gelbison in April 2023. He left the club after they lost in the relegation playoffs.
