History of Arezzo Football Club
How Arezzo Football Started
The club began on September 9, 1923. A group of friends and football fans created it. They named it Juventus Football Club Arezzo to honor the famous Juventus F.C. team.
In 1930, several smaller Arezzo teams joined together. The club then became Unione Sportiva Arezzo. By 1935, it was allowed to play in the new Serie C division.
Early Years and Promotions
Arezzo faced some money problems and was moved out of Serie C in 1953. But five years later, they returned to Serie C. In 1961, Arezzo started playing its games at the Stadio Comunale, which is still their home stadium today.
In 1966, Arezzo made it to Serie B for the first time! To celebrate, they played a friendly match against the Brazilian team Vasco da Gama and won 2–1. However, they went back to Serie C the next year.
Returning to Serie B
Arezzo won Serie C again in 1969 and returned to Serie B, where they played until 1975. In 1971, a great striker named Francesco Graziani joined the team. He quickly became a favorite player for the fans.
The club's third time in Serie B was in 1982. This happened under coach Antonio Valentin Angelillo, with Tullio Gritti as a key striker. The year before, Arezzo had won its first and only Italy's Serie C Cup. They beat Ternana in the final match.
Challenges and New Beginnings
In 1984, Arezzo almost made it to Serie A, which is the top league. They finished just five points away from a promotion spot. But in 1988, even with a strong team, Arezzo was moved down to Serie C1.
In 1993, the club had serious money problems and had to stop playing. A group of people, including former Arezzo star Ciccio Graziani, started a new club called Associazione Calcio Arezzo. This new team began playing in Serie D.
Rise with New Coaches
In 1996, a new coach named Serse Cosmi joined the team. He didn't have much experience in higher divisions, but he quickly led Arezzo to win Serie D. This brought the club back to professional football.
In 1998, with Cosmi still as coach, Arezzo won the Serie C2 promotion playoffs. This meant they moved up to Serie C1. In the 1999–2000 season, Arezzo almost won promotion again but lost in the playoffs.
After Cosmi left for a Serie A team, Antonio Cabrini became the new coach. Mario Frick joined as a forward. The team returned to Serie B in 2004 with Mario Somma as coach. The next season, Pasquale Marino took over, and Arezzo managed to stay in Serie B.
Recent Years and Refoundation
At the end of the 2009–10 Lega Pro Prima Divisione season, the club faced financial issues again. They could not join the next season's tournament. A new club, Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Atletico Arezzo, was then started in Serie D.
In November 2010, a group of business people bought the club. They made many changes, including bringing in former player Maurizio Coppola as head coach. Abel Balbo, a former Serie A star, became an assistant coach.
On July 1, 2012, the club changed its name to Unione Sportiva Arezzo. Balbo became the new head coach, but Michele Bacis replaced him later that year. In January 2013, Mauro Ferretti bought the club. Soon after, Federico Nofri became the coach.
For the 2013–14 season, Davide Mezzanotti was the new coach. Arezzo finished third. Later, in September 2014, Arezzo was allowed back into Lega Pro. Under coach Ezio Capuano, the club avoided being moved down for two seasons. For the 2016–17 season, Stefano Sottili became the head coach. The team also signed important players like former Serie A player Davide Moscardelli.
Scoring History
Arezzo's highest scoring game and best win was in the 2004–05 season. They defeated Verona with a score of 5–3.
