Giuseppe Natoli Gongora di Scaliti (born June 9, 1815 – died September 25, 1867) was an important Italian lawyer and politician. He came from the island of Sicily. He served as the Minister of Agriculture in the very first government of the Kingdom of Italy. This was right after Italy became a united country in 1861.

Early Life and Education
Giuseppe Natoli was born in Messina, Sicily, on June 9, 1815. His parents were Giacomo Natoli and Emanuela Cianciolo.
He first studied public speaking and philosophy at the Accademia Carolina in Messina. Later, he went to the University of Palermo to study law. He finished his law degree at the age of 22.
Teaching and Early Career
Starting in 1843, Natoli began teaching at the University of Messina. He was offered a job as a judge, but he turned it down. He did not want to work for the Bourbon king who ruled Sicily at that time.
Political Journey and Exile
Giuseppe Natoli took part in the Sicilian Revolution of 1848. This was a big uprising against the king. Because of his involvement, he had to leave Sicily. He moved to Turin, where he lived in exile for eleven years.
Return to Sicily and Unification
In 1860, Natoli helped organize Giuseppe Garibaldi's plan to take over Sicily. This was a key step in uniting Italy. Natoli sailed with the second group of ships to Sicily.
During Garibaldi's short rule, Natoli was briefly the Minister for Agriculture. He also acted as the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Role in the Kingdom of Italy
After Italy became a united country in 1861, Giuseppe Natoli was asked to join the new government. Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, invited him to become the Minister for Agriculture. This was in the very first government of the new Kingdom of Italy.
Senator and Governor Roles
Natoli was also made a Senator of Italy. He was appointed as a prefetto, which is like a governor, for the city of Brescia. However, he was removed from this job after soldiers fired on a crowd in May 1862.
After that, he served as prefetto for Siena for about two weeks.
Minister of Education
In 1864, another important politician named Alfonso La Marmora chose Natoli to be the Minister for Education. In 1865, he also temporarily served as the Minister for Home Affairs for a few months.
Later Life and Legacy
Giuseppe Natoli passed away on September 25, 1867, during a cholera outbreak in Messina. He was first buried in a local chapel.
Later, on July 6, 1880, his remains were moved to the Gran Camposanto di Messina
. This is a large monumental cemetery. A famous sculptor named Letterio Gangeri created a big monument there to honor him.Natoli received several important awards during his life. He was a Grand Officer of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. He was also an officer of the Order of San Marino.
