Giuseppi Logan (May 22, 1935 – April 17, 2020) was a talented jazz musician. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Giuseppi taught himself to play piano and drums. When he was 12, he started playing reed instruments. By age 15, he was already playing with famous musicians like Earl Bostic. He later studied music at the New England Conservatory. In 1964, he moved to New York City. There, he became a big part of the exciting "free jazz" music scene.

Giuseppi Logan's Musical Journey

Giuseppi Logan could play many instruments. He was skilled at the alto and tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, piano, and oboe. He worked with other great musicians. These included Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, and Bill Dixon.

Logan also formed his own music group. His quartet included pianist Don Pullen, bassist Eddie Gómez, and percussionist Milford Graves. When Don Pullen left, pianist Dave Burrell joined the group. Giuseppi was also a member of Byard Lancaster's band. He toured and recorded with singer Patty Waters.

He recorded two albums for the ESP-Disk record label. Later, he appeared on an album by Roswell Rudd on the Impulse! label. A third album was planned in 1965. However, it was never released, possibly due to personal challenges Logan faced.

Returning to Music

Giuseppi Logan stepped away from the music scene in the early 1970s. For over 30 years, people did not know where he was. In 2008, he was filmed by a Christian mission group. This was after he returned to New York. Around this time, filmmaker Suzannah Troy made short films of Logan. They showed him practicing music in his favorite spot, Tompkins Square Park.

In 2009, Logan was featured in Signal to Noise Magazine. This article talked about his "comeback" concert. It happened at the Bowery Poetry Club in February 2009. On April 6, 2009, Logan performed with a group in New York City. Later that year, he appeared in a short film called Water in the Boat. His music improvisations were the soundtrack for the film.

In 2010, Logan released a new album. It was called The Giuseppi Logan Quintet. This album announced his return to music. He recorded it with Matt Lavelle, Dave Burrell, Warren Smith, and Francois Grillot. In April 2010, this group performed a concert in Philadelphia.

In October 2011, Logan recorded six more songs. He played with a group of younger experimental musicians. Around 2011, he faced an injury. He then lived in a home in Far Rockaway, Queens. He continued to perform as a street musician in New York.

Giuseppi Logan passed away on April 17, 2020. He died at a nursing facility in Far Rockaway, Queens from COVID-19.
