Byard Lancaster (born August 6, 1942 – died August 23, 2012) was a very creative American musician. He was famous for playing the alto saxophone and the flute. He was a big part of a special kind of music called avant-garde jazz. This type of jazz is known for being very experimental and free.
Early Life and Learning Music
Byard Lancaster was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He loved music from a young age. He went to two different colleges to study music. One of these was the famous Berklee College of Music. After his studies, he moved to New York City. There, he joined many informal music sessions called jam sessions. He played with other talented musicians like saxophonist Archie Shepp and drummer Elvin Jones.
Music Career and Collaborations
Byard Lancaster started recording music in 1965. One of his first albums was with a musician named Sunny Murray. He continued to work with Sunny Murray for many years. By the 1970s, Byard Lancaster had played with many famous jazz artists. These included McCoy Tyner and Sun Ra. He also played with musicians from other styles, like blues artists Memphis Slim and Johnny Copeland.
He performed often with cellist David Eyges later in his life. Byard Lancaster recorded many albums as a leader and as a sideman. A sideman is a musician who plays with a band but is not the main leader. He recorded for a record company called Creative Improvised Music Projects. Byard Lancaster passed away on August 23, 2012, from a serious illness.
