Gizem Girişmen is a famous Turkish archer. She competes in Paralympic archery. She was born on November 25, 1981. She uses a recurve bow in the ARW2 category.

Gizem Girişmen: Early Life and Archery Start

A New Path After an Accident

In 1992, when Gizem was eleven, she had a traffic accident. This accident caused her to become paralyzed. She continued her education and graduated with honors. In 2004, she finished her Business Administration degree. She studied at Bilkent University.

Discovering Archery

In 2004, Gizem was invited to an archery competition. She found the sport very interesting. She decided to try it herself. She started practicing archery in her apartment building. Her neighbors gave her permission to use the basement garage.

First International Competition

Gizem practiced archery for two years. She also gained experience in national tournaments. Her first international competition was in 2006. It was the EPC Archery European Championships. This event took place in the Czech Republic. Gizem won third place in the ARW2 Recurve Female category.

Becoming a World Champion

Gizem Girişmen achieved great success in 2007. She won first place at the IPC Archery World Championships. This competition was held in Cheongju, South Korea. In the same year, she also won first place. This was at the 2007 Czech Republic International Archery Tournament.

Winning Gold at the Paralympics

In 2008, Gizem competed in the European Disabled Archery Grand Prix. This event was held in the United Kingdom. She earned second place there. Later that year, she represented Turkey at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. She competed in the individual recurve W1/W2 category. Gizem won the gold medal. She beat her Chinese opponent, Fu Hongzhi.

Confirming World Champion Status

In August 2009, Gizem Girişmen showed her skill again. She won gold at the Para-Archery World Championships. This event took place in Nymburk, Czech Republic. This win confirmed her status as a World Champion.

World's Number One Archer

Since 2007, Gizem has been ranked as the Number One Archer in the World. This ranking is for Women's Individual Recurve-W1/W2.

Laureus World Sportsperson Nomination

Gizem Girişmen was nominated for a very special award. It was the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year. She was the first Turkish athlete to be nominated for this award.

Turkish Archery Records

Gizem Girişmen also holds several Turkish records. These records are for the ARW2 female category. They include records for 30-50-60-70 meters, FITA, 70 meter round, and Olympic Round Match.

Competing at the 2012 Paralympics

Gizem competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She participated in the women's individual recurve W1/W2 event. She lost in the quarterfinals to an Iranian opponent. She was also part of the Turkish team. The women's team recurve event saw them finish 5th. They lost to the team from Italy in the quarterfinals.
