Gizem Girişmen

Gizem Girişmen, born on November 25, 1981, is an amazing archer from Turkey. She competes in Paralympic archery, which is a sport for athletes with disabilities. Gizem is known for her skill in the women's recurve ARW2 event.

Early Life and Archery Start

Gizem faced a big challenge in 1992 when she was eleven years old. An accident caused her to become paralyzed. Despite this, she worked hard and graduated with honors from Bilkent University in 2004.

In the same year, Gizem found her passion for archery. She was invited to an archery competition and decided to try the sport. She even practiced in the basement garage of her apartment building!

After two years of practice, Gizem competed in her first international tournament. This was the 2006 EPC Archery European Championships in the Czech Republic. She won third place in the ARW2 Recurve Female category.

Gizem's Archery Career

Gizem Girişmen has achieved many great things in her archery career.

Becoming a World Champion

In 2007, she won first place at the IPC Archery World Championships in Cheongju, South Korea. That same year, she also won first place at the Czech Republic International Archery Tournament. In 2008, she earned second place at the European Disabled Archery Grand Prix in the United Kingdom.

Winning Paralympic Gold

Gizem represented Turkey at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. She competed in the individual recurve W1/W2 category. She won the gold medal by defeating her Chinese opponent, Fu Hongzhi. This was a huge win for her and for Turkey!

In August 2009, Gizem proved she was still the best. She won another gold medal at the Para-Archery World Championships in Nymburk, Czech Republic.

World Rankings and Records

Gizem Girişmen has been ranked as the Number One Archer in the World for Women's Individual Recurve-W1/W2 since 2007. This shows how consistently good she is!

She was also nominated for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year award. This was a special honor, as she was the first Turkish athlete to be nominated.

Gizem also holds Turkish records for different archery distances and types of matches in her category.

Competing in London 2012

Gizem competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She took part in the women's individual recurve W1/W2 event. She reached the quarterfinals but lost to her opponent from Iran.

She was also part of the Turkish women's team in the recurve event. Her team finished 5th after losing to the team from Italy in the quarterfinals.
