Glória Maria Rebelo Ferrante (born September 25, 1948), known as Glória Perez, is a famous Brazilian screenwriter. She is known for writing popular television shows called telenovelas, which are like long soap operas.

Early Life and Education

Glória Perez was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father, Miguel Jeronimo Ferrante, was a lawyer, and her mother, Maria Augusta Rebelo Ferrante, was a teacher. Because of her family, she has Italian and Portuguese roots.

During her childhood, her family moved several times. She lived in Brasília and São Paulo before settling back in Rio de Janeiro. For her higher education, she studied law and philosophy at the University of Brasília. She later graduated with a degree in history from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

A Career in Writing

Glória's writing journey began in 1979 at Rede Globo, a major Brazilian TV network. She wrote a story for a TV series that caught the eye of a famous writer named Janete Clair. This led to a big opportunity for Glória.

Getting Started

In 1983, Janete Clair asked Glória to be her assistant on the telenovela Eu Prometo. The show was about the world of Brazilian politics. Sadly, Janete Clair passed away before the show was finished. Glória was given the important job of completing the story, with help from Clair's husband, Dias Gomes.

After this, she worked with writer Aguinaldo Silva on the 1984 telenovela Partido Alto. This show told the stories of two women from different parts of Rio de Janeiro.

Famous Telenovelas

Glória Perez became known for writing telenovelas that explored interesting and important topics. Many of her shows have been huge hits in Brazil and around the world.

Exploring New Ideas

In 1990, Glória wrote her first solo telenovela for Rede Globo, called Barriga de Aluguel. The story was about a couple who could not have children. They asked another woman to carry their baby for them, a process known as surrogacy. This was a new and interesting topic for television at the time.

Her next primetime show was De Corpo e Alma in 1992. The show was marked by a sad event: the tragic death of her daughter, Daniella Perez, who was an actress in the telenovela.

Helping the Community

Glória often uses her shows to help people. Her 1995 telenovela, Explode Coração, was about the culture of the Romani people. During the show, they displayed photos of missing children. This amazing idea helped 64 children get found and return to their families. Making a positive social impact became a key part of her work.

Global Success with 'O Clone'

Perhaps her most famous work is O Clone (The Clone), which aired in 2001. The show starred Murilo Benicio and Giovanna Antonelli. It explored fascinating topics like human cloning and Islamic culture. O Clone was a massive success and was shown in many countries. It was so popular that an American remake, El Clon, was made in 2010.

More Hit Shows

  • América (2005): This popular show, starring Deborah Secco, told the story of a woman who moves to the United States from Brazil. It showed the challenges she faced and the lives of the family she left behind.
  • Caminho das Índias (2009): This telenovela focused on Indian culture. It was a big success and became the first Brazilian telenovela to win an International Emmy Award.
  • Salve Jorge (2012): Set in Brazil and Turkey, this show brought attention to the serious problem of international trafficking of people.
  • A Força do Querer (2017): This was her big return to primetime television after a five-year break, and it became another hit with audiences.

Unique Writing Style

Today, Glória Perez is the only telenovela writer at Rede Globo who creates her stories all by herself. Other writers usually work with a team, but she prefers to write alone.
