Glória Perez: Her Life and Work
Early Life and Education
Glória Perez was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was a teacher. Her family moved a few times, living in Brasília and São Paulo before settling back in Rio de Janeiro.
Glória studied law and philosophy at the University of Brasília. She later earned a degree in history from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Starting Her Writing Career
In 1979, Glória Perez began her writing journey at Rede Globo, a big TV network. She wrote a story idea for a TV series. Even though the episode wasn't made, her story caught the eye of a legendary TV writer named Janete Clair.
In 1983, Janete Clair invited Glória to be her assistant for the telenovela Eu Prometo. This show was about Brazilian politics. When Janete Clair sadly passed away that same year, Glória was given the important task of finishing the show. She worked under the guidance of Janete's husband, writer Dias Gomes.
Writing More Telenovelas
The next year, Glória Perez worked with another writer, Aguinaldo Silva, on the telenovela Partido Alto. This story was set in Rio de Janeiro and followed two women from different parts of the city.
In 1987, she joined TV Manchete and wrote Carmem, another telenovela set in Rio.
She returned to Rede Globo in 1990. She wrote Desejo, a miniseries about a love story involving a writer. That same year, she wrote her first solo telenovela for the network, Barriga de Aluguel. This show was about a couple who couldn't have children and asked another woman to carry their baby for them.
Major Successes and Challenges
Because her miniseries and telenovela were so successful, Glória Perez was asked to write her first primetime telenovela. This means a show that airs during the most popular viewing hours. This show was De Corpo e Alma (1992). The production of this show was marked by a very sad event: the tragic death of the author's daughter, Daniela Perez, who was also an actress in the show.
Her fifth telenovela, Explode Coração (1995), explored the customs of the Romani people. This show also did something very special: it showed pictures of missing children during its run. As a result, 64 children were reunited with their families! This kind of social help became a special part of Glória Perez's work.
In 1998, she wrote the miniseries Hilda Furacão. She also wrote some episodes for the series Mulher, which showed the daily lives of two female doctors. Later that year, Glória Perez worked on a new version of Pecado Capital, a story originally written by Janete Clair. It was about a taxi driver who finds a bag of money from a robbery.
International Recognition
One of Glória Perez's most famous works is O Clone, a telenovela from 2001. This show explored interesting topics like cloning and Islamic culture. O Clone was a huge hit and was shown in many countries around the world. It even had a remake called El Clon in 2010.
In 2005, she wrote another popular show, América. This telenovela focused on the life of someone trying to enter the United States without official permission and the lives of their family back in Brazil.
In 2007, she wrote Amazônia – De Galvez a Chico Mendes, a miniseries about the history of the Acre region in Brazil.
In 2009, Perez wrote Caminho das Índias, a telenovela that showed Indian culture. This show was the first Brazilian telenovela to win an International Emmy Award, which is a very important prize for TV shows worldwide!
In 2012, she wrote her tenth telenovela, Salve Jorge, which was set in both Brazil and Turkey.
In 2013, she helped supervise the script for the miniseries O Canto da Sereia. The next year, she wrote Dupla Identidade, which was the first Brazilian series filmed and produced in super clear 4K quality.
After five years, she returned to primetime in 2017 with the telenovela A Força do Querer.
Today, Glória Perez is the only telenovela writer at Rede Globo who works completely by herself, without other writers helping her.
