Glacier finch facts for kids
The glacier finch (Idiopsar speculifer), also known as the white-winged diuca finch or glacier bird, is a fascinating small bird. It belongs to the Thraupidae family, which includes many types of tanagers. These birds are known for living in very high, cold places.
The glacier finch is found in parts of Peru, Bolivia, and the northern areas of Chile and Argentina. It prefers to live in high-altitude grasslands, especially where the ground is wet and boggy.
Life in the Mountains
This bird is special because it can survive in extreme conditions. It is one of the few birds known to build its nest right on high-altitude glaciers. This is why it earned the name "glacier bird."
Building a Nest
The glacier finch builds a strong, cup-shaped nest. It uses materials like grass, small twigs, and feathers. These nests can be quite heavy, sometimes weighing up to half a pound! They are often placed directly on the ice.
Reproduction and Young
Female glacier finches usually lay two eggs. This happens around April or May. The young birds grow quickly and are ready to leave the nest by June or July. Living in such a cold environment means they must develop fast.
