The glacier finch (Idiopsar speculifer), also known as the white-winged diuca finch or glacier bird, is a type of bird. It belongs to the tanager family, called Thraupidae.
About the Glacier Finch
This special bird is found in parts of South America. It lives in countries like Peru, Bolivia, and the northern areas of Chile and Argentina.
Where It Lives
The glacier finch loves to live in high-up places. Its natural habitat is grassland areas that are very high in the mountains. It especially likes wet, marshy ground.
Its Special Nest
The glacier finch is one of the few birds known to build its nest right on high-altitude glaciers. This is why it is also called the "glacier bird"!
The nest is quite big and shaped like a cup. It is made from grass, small twigs, and feathers. A nest can weigh as much as half a pound. It is often placed directly on the ice.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Female glacier finches usually lay two eggs. This happens in April or May. The young birds grow quickly. They are ready to leave the nest in June or July.
