Gladstone is a small, quiet place in Union County, New Mexico, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is an "unincorporated community," meaning it's a group of homes and businesses without a local government. It was started in 1880.
Gladstone is located where US Route 56 meets Union County Road C001. It once had a post office, which opened in 1888 but closed in 2010. Today, Gladstone has just a general store that offers gas service, and two houses. Most of the land around it has returned to being private ranch land.
The Story of Gladstone: How It Began
Gladstone was founded in 1880 by a man named William H. Harris. He was from England and had a big dream. He wanted to create a special religious community called "Gladstone Colony." He hoped it would be a perfect, ideal place, like a "Utopian" society.
Mr. Harris named the community after William Ewart Gladstone. This person was a very important Liberal politician in Britain at the time. He was even the British Prime Minister.
Many people came to settle in Gladstone at first. However, many of them soon left because they were disappointed.
