Location from Glasgow Airport

Glasgow International Airport (Scottish Gaelic: Port-adhair Eadar-nàiseanta Ghlaschu) (IATA: GLAICAO: EGPF) is a big airport in Scotland. It used to be called Glasgow Abbotsinch Airport. The airport is about 6 miles (10 km) west of the Glasgow city centre. It is close to the towns of Paisley and Renfrew in Renfrewshire.

In 2011, nearly 6.9 million people traveled through Glasgow Airport. This made it the second busiest airport in Scotland, after Edinburgh Airport. It was also the eighth busiest airport in the whole United Kingdom. Glasgow Airport is the main airport for the wider Glasgow area.

The airport is owned by Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited. This company also owns four other airports in the UK. Many airlines use Glasgow Airport. The most frequent users are British Airways and Loganair. Loganair uses Glasgow as a main base, also known as a hub. Other large airlines that fly from Glasgow include Flybe, EasyJet, Jet2, Thomas Cook Airlines, and Thomson Airways.

Airport History

Glasgow Airport first opened its doors in 1966. When it first started, flights only went to other places within the United Kingdom and Europe.

In 1975, the British Airports Authority (BAA) took over running the airport. By the 1980s, Glasgow Airport began to offer flights to places all around the world. This made it a truly international airport.

Important Event

On June 30, 2007, there was a serious event at Glasgow Airport. A car filled with gas canisters was driven into the main terminal building. This caused some damage and injured a few people.
