Glen Canyon facts for kids
Glen Canyon is a huge natural valley, or canyon, located in the United States. It stretches across parts of Utah and Arizona. This amazing canyon was slowly carved out over millions of years by the powerful Colorado River. The Colorado River is a very long river that eventually flows all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
Today, much of Glen Canyon is covered by the waters of Lake Powell. This large lake was created when the Glen Canyon Dam was built across the Colorado River. The dam holds back the river's water, forming the big reservoir (a man-made lake) we know as Lake Powell.

Understanding Lake Powell and the Dam
Lake Powell is one of the largest man-made lakes in North America. It was created to store water for people in the dry southwestern United States. This water is used for drinking, farming, and making electricity.
Why the Dam is Talked About
The Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell are quite famous, but they also cause a lot of discussion. Many environmental groups believe that the dam has changed the natural environment of the canyon too much. They think that removing the dam would help bring back the original beauty and ecosystem of Glen Canyon. This is a big topic with many different ideas about what is best for the environment and for people who rely on the water.
