Glenalmond facts for kids
Glenalmond or Glen Almond (which is Gleann Amain in Scottish Gaelic) is a beautiful glen (which means a narrow valley) in Scotland. It stretches for many miles west of the city of Perth in Perth and Kinross. The River Almond flows right through it.
The upper part of Glenalmond is very mountainous and hardly anyone lives there. But as you go further east, the glen opens up and becomes wider. This change happens because the river crosses a special geological line called the Highland Boundary Fault. This fault separates the Grampian Highlands (a rugged, high area) from the Central Lowlands (a flatter, lower area).

Discover Glenalmond: A Scottish Valley
Glenalmond is a long valley in the heart of Scotland. It's known for its natural beauty and the river that runs through it.
The River Almond's Journey
The River Almond starts its journey in the mountains. As it flows through Glenalmond, the landscape around it changes a lot. In the western part, the valley is narrow and wild, surrounded by tall mountains. This is where the river is fast and rocky.
Further east, the valley becomes much wider and more open. This change happens because of a major geological feature called the Highland Boundary Fault. Imagine a huge crack in the Earth's crust! This fault line marks where the ancient, hard rocks of the Scottish Highlands meet the younger, softer rocks of the Lowlands. So, as the River Almond crosses this line, the scenery transforms from rugged mountains to gentler, rolling hills.
The Sma' Glen: A Special Place
A small part of Glenalmond has a special name: the Sma' Glen (or Caol Ghlinn Amain in Gaelic). "Sma'" means "small" in Scots. This section of the glen is very deep and narrow. It runs in a slightly different direction, from northwest to southeast.
The A822 road uses this deep, narrow part of the Sma' Glen to connect the towns of Crieff and Strathbran. This road follows a path that was first made by General Wade's Military Road back in the mid-1700s. General Wade was a British general who built roads to help control the Highlands.
What Else is in Glenalmond?
Glenalmond is home to a few interesting places. Dallick House is a large, fancy self-catering house located near the entrance to the Sma' Glen. It's a place where people can stay for holidays.
Further down the glen, in the eastern part, you'll find Glenalmond College. This is a private boarding school, which means students live and study there.
