Glencoe is a small community in Calaveras County, California. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Glencoe sits high up at 2,749 feet (838 meters) above sea level. Its ZIP code is 95232, and about 145 people live there.

Glencoe got its name from Glencoe, Scotland. This Scottish place is famous for an event called the Massacre of Glencoe that happened in 1692.

History of Glencoe

Glencoe used to have different names, like Mosquito and Mosquito Gulch. The main part of the old town was on the north side of Mosquito Gulch. However, none of the original buildings from that time are still standing today.

Early Mining Days

People started mining in this area in the early 1850s. Miners from Mexico were among the first to work here. They mostly focused on quartz mining, which means digging for gold found in rocks. There was also some placer mining, where gold was found in riverbeds or loose dirt.

Post Office and Landmark Status

The first post office in Mosquito opened in 1858. It closed for a while but reopened in 1873 as Mosquito Gulch. In 1912, the name officially changed to Glencoe. The post office closed again in 1916 but was re-established in 1947. Today, Glencoe is recognized as California Historical Landmark #280. This means it's an important historical site in California.

Wildfires in Glencoe

Wildfires have affected Glencoe several times. In 2022, a large fire called the Electra Fire (2022) caused many people in Glencoe to leave their homes for safety. Another big fire, the Butte Fire, also impacted the area in September 2019. These fires show how important it is for communities like Glencoe to be prepared for emergencies.
