History of Glendale Heights
Before the 1950s, Glendale Heights was mostly farmland. Only about 104 people lived here in 1959. It was so small that its mail came from the Glen Ellyn post office.
In 1958, two brothers, Charles and Harold Reskin, who owned a company called Midland Enterprises, started building houses. They bought two farms and began building homes on Glen Ellyn Road and Larry Lane.
Because of this growth, the village officially became a town on July 13, 1959. The very first election for the new village happened on August 2 of that same year.
The town was first called "Glendale" because it was between Glen Ellyn and Bloomingdale. But there was already a small town named Glendale in southern Illinois. To avoid confusion, in March 1960, the town added "Heights" to its name. This "Heights" refers to how the land rises and falls, with some areas being about 100 feet higher than others.
