Glenella's Location and Land
Most of Glenella is low land, less than 10 meters (about 33 feet) above sea level. However, some hills rise higher, up to 60 meters (about 197 feet).
The eastern and southeastern parts of Glenella are where people live. There's also a small area for businesses and factories in the southeast. The rest of the suburb is mostly rural. Farmers here grow sugarcane and some areas are used for grazing animals on natural grasslands.
Roads and Railways in Glenella
The Bruce Highway is a major road that goes through Glenella. It enters from the east (from Mount Pleasant) and leaves to the west (towards Farleigh).
The North Coast railway line also crosses Glenella. It comes in from the northeast (from Richmond) and exits to the west (towards Farleigh). You might also see many small cane tramways around. These special tracks are used by Mackay Sugar to transport harvested sugarcane to sugar mills, like the one in nearby Farleigh.
A Look Back at Glenella's History
Glenella has an interesting past, especially with its school and community hall.
Glenella State School's Journey
The school we know today as Glenella State School first opened its doors on February 3, 1879. Back then, it was called Mackay North State School, and 35 children were its first students. Daniel Shea was their first teacher.
On April 1, 1912, the school's name was changed to Glenella State School. A big storm, the 1918 Mackay cyclone, hit the area very hard and damaged the school so badly that it had to be completely rebuilt. Interestingly, this school is not the same as the current Mackay North State School, which opened later in 1915 in North Mackay. For a while, Glenella State School was also informally known as Hill End State School. This was because Hill End was an earlier name for the Glenella area.
The Old Glenella Hall
Glenella Hall first opened on Saturday, October 8, 1938. Its grand opening was a dance held to raise money for the Mackay Ambulance service, and over 300 people attended! The hall was owned by Ted Jackson and was located right next to his Glenella Hotel. The hotel was at the corner of Hill End Road and Davey Street. Sadly, the hotel was taken down around 1980.
