Glenhayes is a small, unincorporated community located in Wayne County, West Virginia, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

Discovering Glenhayes, West Virginia

Glenhayes is nestled along the Tug Fork river. It's also right on U.S. Route 52. This road is important for travel in the area. The community is about 8.1 miles (13 kilometers) southeast of a town called Fort Gay.

How Glenhayes Got Its Name

The name "Glenhayes" is a mix of two names. One part comes from James K. Glenn. He was a "land speculator," which means he bought and sold land, hoping its value would increase. The other part of the name comes from Rutherford B. Hayes. He was the 19th President of the United States. So, the community's name combines a local figure with a famous national leader.

A Look at Community Life

Glenhayes once had its own post office. This was a central place for people to send and receive mail. However, the post office closed its doors on November 9, 2002.
