Glenn Douglas Barnard Cornick (born April 23, 1947 – died August 28, 2014) was an English bass guitarist. He was famous for being the first bass player for the British rock band Jethro Tull. He played with them from 1967 to 1970. Rolling Stone magazine said his bass playing with Jethro Tull was "strong and quick." They called it a key part of the band's blues and jazz sound.

Early Life and Music Career

Glenn Cornick went to Barrow-in-Furness Grammar School for Boys. Later, he moved to Blackpool, England. His first band was called "The Executives." They played popular songs in clubs and pubs.

After that, he joined a soul band named John Evan Smash. In this band, he played with Ian Anderson and Mick Abrahams. A drummer named Clive Bunker, who was friends with Mick, then joined them. Together, these musicians formed the band Jethro Tull.

Playing with Jethro Tull

Glenn Cornick toured and recorded with Jethro Tull from late 1967 to late 1970. He played bass on the band's first three studio albums. These albums were This Was, Stand Up, and Benefit. Glenn was one of the few band members who had formal music training. This helped him play a big part in arranging the band's songs.

During his time with Jethro Tull, Glenn became known for his strong stage presence. He showed great skill and musical talent. You can see him play live with Jethro Tull in the video Nothing is Easy - Live at the Isle of Wight. This video was recorded in 1970 and released in 2004. Glenn left the band because his way of life was different from the other members.

Forming Wild Turkey

After leaving Jethro Tull, Glenn Cornick played as a session musician. This means he played on recordings for other artists. He played on Leigh Stephens' 1971 album, And a Cast of Thousands.

In the same year, Glenn started his own band called Wild Turkey. The first members included Graham Williams and Alan 'Tweke' Lewis on guitar. John Weathers played drums, and Gary Pickford-Hopkins was the singer. However, John Weathers and Graham Williams left before the band recorded any music. John Weathers later joined the band Gentle Giant.

Jon Blackmore (guitar and vocals) and Jeff Jones (drums) then joined Wild Turkey. This new lineup, with Glenn, Tweke, and Gary, recorded their first album, Battle Hymn. The band released a second album, Turkey, before they broke up for a while.

Karthago and Paris Bands

Glenn Cornick then joined a German band called Karthago. He recorded one album with them, Rock'N'Roll Testament. After this, he moved to Los Angeles in the United States.

In Los Angeles, Glenn formed a new band called Paris. He started this band with guitarist Bob Welch, who used to be in Fleetwood Mac. Thom Mooney played drums. Paris released their first album, Paris, in 1975. Later, Hunt Sales replaced Thom Mooney on drums. In 1976, they recorded their second album, Big Towne, 2061. The band Paris broke up in 1977.

Later Music Work

In 1996, Glenn Cornick took part in a special album. It was a tribute to Jethro Tull called To Cry You A Song - A collection of Tull Tales. He played on several songs, including "Nothing Is Easy" and "Living in the Past." He played alongside other former Jethro Tull members like Clive Bunker and Mick Abrahams.

In the early 2000s, two live albums by Wild Turkey were released. These were Final Performance (2000) and Live In Edinburgh (2001). In 2006, Wild Turkey recorded their fourth studio album, You and Me in the Jungle. Glenn Cornick, Gary Pickford-Hopkins, and other musicians who had played with him before were part of this album. Former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker also joined them.

Death

Glenn Cornick passed away in Hilo, Hawaii, on August 28, 2014. He died because of heart failure.

News of his death was shared widely in music magazines like Prog Magazine and Rolling Stone. Ian Anderson, his former bandmate from Jethro Tull, shared a tribute on the band's website. Martin Barre, another friend and musician, also expressed sadness about Glenn's passing.
