A Look Back at Glenwood's History

Early Settlers and Plantations

Glenwood was first settled a long time ago, in the early 1700s. Families like the Ridgley and Warfield families moved here. They started large farms called plantations, where they grew tobacco. Some of these big farms included ""Bushy Park"," "Longwood," and "Ellerslie."

How Glenwood Got Its Name

In 1822, a man named James B. Matthews bought a large farm. It had a stone house and was about 200 acres big. On July 30, 1841, he opened a post office there. He called the area "Matthews Store." This post office served the community until 1874. The historic Union Chapel was built in 1833.

The area where Matthews Store was located used to be part of Anne Arundel County. Later, it became a new area called Howard County. During the Civil War, many farms in the area stopped using enslaved labor. In 1874, the "Matthews Store" post office closed. A new post office opened on January 13, 1874, and it was renamed "Glenwood." James Matthew's son, Professor Lycurgus Matthews, gave it this new name.
