Glidden is a small community in Colorado County, Texas, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government. It's also a census-designated place (CDP), which is an area the government defines for counting people. In 2010, about 661 people lived there. Glidden is located just north of a major highway called Interstate 10 and is about 3 miles (5 km) west of Columbus.
Glidden's History
Glidden started because of the railroad! In 1885, the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway created the town site. Three years later, a post office opened in Glidden. The town became a very important stop for trains, especially for fixing them, on the long journey between Houston and El Paso.
The community grew a lot during big wars like the Spanish–American War and the two World Wars. However, after these wars, trains started using diesel and electric engines instead of steam engines. This meant that many of the railroad repair shops in Glidden were no longer needed. Because of this, the number of people living in Glidden went down to about 150 by the late 1940s.
